Crohn’s Disease
- May 31, 2023
Only patients with Crohn’s Disease can truly explain how difficult it is to live with it because of its unpredictable nature. A disease flare-up may make them feel vulnerable, confused, lonely, and embarrassed. Crohn’s Disease may also produce life-threatening complications. It is an inflammatory bowel disease that results from a complex interplay between both environmental and genetic impact. The gastrointestinal tract is affected by inflammation, and disease is characterized by periods of flare-ups lasting from a few days to several months. Crohn’s Disease is chronic and incurable, but it is treatable. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1756283X15592585)
The fundamental clinical features include chronic diarrhea, mucus or blood (or both) in stools, abdominal pain, fatigue, psychological issues, and weight loss. Besides these, patients sometimes experience problems in other parts of their body aside from the intestinal tract.
A number of medicines are administered to suppress the inflammation that comes with Chron’s Disease; but even with optimal therapy, many patients continue to experience symptoms of the disease and, thus, have a poor quality of life.
Marijuana may help with a few symptoms of Crohn’s Disease, such as improving sleep and appetite. While it may not be helpful as the main treatment for this disease, it can still play a part as an adjunct. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7406822/
Evidence suggests that 15% to 40% of patients who suffer from Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) use marijuana in order to improve their quality of life. (https://www.cureus.com/articles/67264-cannabis-and-its-potential-protective-role-against-inflammatory-bowel-disease-a-scoping-revie)
Several studies have also reported lessening of pain and depression and improvement in general health in patients who use marijuana. (https://academic.oup.com/ibdjournal/article/25/3/427/5144402)
